Itineraries worth the detour: destinations to extend your trip
You pick your main destination, start putting the itinerary together, and then realize there's an amazing city just a few hours away. That's the moment to consider stretching the trip a little further. In many cases, adding two or three extra days lets you see another place without having to plan a whole new international trip from scratch.
If you're heading to Lisbon, for example, you can add Sintra and Cascais to the itinerary or continue on to Porto. A stop in Rome can feel completely different with a few days in Florence or across Tuscany. And if Paris is your main destination, the excellent rail connections make it easy to explore other regions of France or even combine the trip with a neighboring country.
The trick is to look beyond the city printed on your ticket. Short distances, fast trains, domestic flights, and good road connections mean many destinations are closer than they look on a map. Sometimes that place you'd saved for "a future trip" fits perfectly into this one.
But extending your stay also calls for balance. An overly packed itinerary can leave you spending more time on transfers, check-ins, and luggage than actually enjoying each city. It's worth choosing extensions that make geographical sense and add a genuinely different experience to the trip.
Before locking in your dates, try a simple exercise: see what's two or three hours from your main destination. It could be a historic city, a wine region, a beach, or even another country. Some of the best moments of a trip start with exactly this kind of small detour from the original plan.
